Intra-role conflict perceptions were found to exist among a sample of 409 non-MSW line public welfare workers, particularly for the following groups: (1) youngest, (2) white, (3) eligibility workers, and (4) least tenured. Multiple regression analysis revealed that age was the best predictor and was inversely correlated with the rate of perceived role conflict. Recommendations to reduce this conflict include: (1) improved matching of workers with job assignments; (2) upgrading orientation and training of new workers; (3) more involvement of welfare clients in the evaluation of workers; and (4) more client participation in the planning and program development processes which affect the nature of their social and eligibility services. |
