At Janssen Pharmaceutica, a division of Johnson & Johnson, the age of the automated office has arrived with the introduction of advanced information retrieval software packages. This paper will describe the application of Wang-Advanced Functions List Processing and Visual Memory to the animal/in vitro database. The automated file is used not only as a quick and efficient way to retrieve information on any number of fields, but is used in conjunction with word processing. Through word processing applications, forms and charts can be constructed before the data are selected and sorted. By simply merge printing the information, then printing it via a laser printer which produces 12 pages of text per minute, quarterly and annual report summaries are completed within hours instead of days.
