The future of technical services will be determined by that of publishing, but change in both is slower than some futurists imagine, and along different lines, for economic reasons. Economics will necessitate a general revision of the underlying assumptions of technical services, and this will have a profound effect on its relationship to the rest of the library and on its staff.
