A method of determining Existing Collection Strength (ECS) and Current Collection Intensity (CCI) based upon compilation of cataloging statistics by Conspectus call number is discussed. Previously, measurement of ECS required either shelf list counting or online library system manipulation. Assessment of CCI was difficult because acquisition statistics were kept by academic department rather than by Library of Congress classification. As the Conspectus methodology is structured on worksheets with assigned Library of Congress call number sequence, assessment was often perceived by academic departments as incomplete and erroneous as this method does not allow for institutional specificity. Examination of technical services statistical recording revealed a possible solution. Conspectus worksheets were used to construct a database which assigned appropriate call number ranges to each academic department for areas in which the department had collection responsibilities. A LOTUS 1-2-3 spreadsheet was designed to gather statistics bv department and/or by call number. Benefits were greater than anticipated and included a more thorough and flexible statistical responsiveness in reporting data of both assessed and unassessed disciplines.
