AbstractThe Raman spectra of pure LaNbO<sub>4</sub> and LaNbO<sub>4</sub>:Tb<sup>3+</sup> single crystals and powders are compared to the data from measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) times in LaNbO<sub>4</sub> single crystals with impurities of rare earth ions (RE<sup>3+</sup>). Evidence is found that the optical and ‘‘defect'’ lattice vibrations make an effective contribution in SLR processes in the ferroelastic phase of LaNbO<sub>4</sub>
