A method for measuring the diameter of fast-moving thin fibres is described. The optical diffraction pattern of the fibre is sampled by a special spatial filter so that the fibre diameter corresponds to the position of a straight moiré line of least modulation across the filter. Observation can be performed visually or by opto-electronic means.
