Calculations of ground- and excited-state polarizabilities and hyper-polarizabilities of cis-, trans- and diphenyl-polyenes have been carried out by means of cubic response theory implemented at the random-phase approxi mation level. The length, frequency and conformational dependences of these quantities are predicted and discussed.
