ABSTRACTU.S. Extension Service identifies the need for people to become ‘information literate’ (Greiner, Cain, and Hodges, 1992). The Future Application of Communication Technology report (ES-USDA and ECOP, 1992) states there is a need to increase staff knowledge and skills in communication and information technologies. The purpose of the study was to determine the training of selected information literacy competencies needed by Montana Extension Service (MES) professionals for electronically acquiring and disseminating information. The structure of the study was according to Borich's (1980) needs assessment model. Results and conclusions indicate that MES professionals need training of electronic information literacy competencies, and encouragement and incentives to use information in an electronic format. Selected demographic factors had no influence on MES professionals' need of training to gain electronic information literacy.
