A learner‐centered journal club that is part of the Rhode Island Hospital general internal medicine residency program emphasizes working collaboratively with a faculty member, developing medical expertise, relating the medical literature to practice, and gaining skills in teaching and presentation. Thirty‐two residents in this program responding to a survey perceived that this learner‐centered journal club favorably affected their reading habits, presentation skills, ability to determine clinical usefulness of an article, analytic skills, and development of content expertise while maintaining a high level of interest in participating. These ratings were higher than those given by the same residents to a traditional journal club they also attended.
