Central to effective mainstreaming are communication and collaborative consultation, whereby professionals work together to assist students with disabilities in the regular classroom. Attempting to bridge the gap between theory and practice, we summarize relevant communication studies and offer specific, research‐based recommendations to enhance communication and the effectiveness of consultation.
